HIV OFFER PROCESS
HIV offer form is printing out at triage.
The HIV offer is indicated for patients 13-64 years.
The triage nurse hands the patient the HIV offer form AND the fact sheet of why you would want an HIV test. (see fact sheet attached). There is no education at this time, just the offer that the test is available and information to review.
The registrar collects the HIV offer form when s/he is updating the patients demographics.
If the patient indicates a "NO" they don't want to be tested it goes into the patient's chart
If the patient indicates "YES" they want to be tested it is handed from the registrar DIRECTLY TO THE CLERK WHO WILL HAND IT TO THE APPROPRIATE ATTENDING
The test is then ordered, the one that states, HIV-1 (Rapid) Ab Screen. This test can ONLY be ordered on an Emergency Department patient.
The test should take about an hour and the patient should not leave until it results.
If the patient is a self-pay, they are charged for the test.
The informational sheets should then be given to the patient: YOU TESTED NEGATIVE... YOU TESTED POSITIVE (for adults and peds) and the location and times to follow up -- the form indicates day and location. If possible, call the ID offices to make sure they are expecting the patient. The forms are in the ED available for use.
Stony Brook's HIV counselor, Sherry Hatcher (4-3592), may need to counsel the patient in the ED. We would need to provide the patient privacy for this discussion.
