Causes Manifestations Treatment
  • Modest intake with GFR < 30 ml/min

  • Excess intake with dehydration
    or renal insufficiency

  • Neonates of eclamptic mothers

  • Rare – lithium, hypothyroidism,
    milk-alkali syndrome

  • Cardiovascular

    • Hypotension (vasodilation)

    • Bradyarrhythmias, A-fib

    • ECG

    • Increased PR

    • Increased QRS

    • Conduction delays

  • Neurologic (depression)

    • Mental status

      • drowsiness to coma

    • Hypotonia

    • Decreased DTRs (>4-6)

    • Respiratory depression

    • Weakness

  • Other

    • Nausea, vomiting

    • Bladder dysfunction
      (atonia - difficulty urinating)

  • 5% CaCl2 5cc slow IV push

  • ECF expansion/loop diuretics

  • Dialysis (> 8 mEq/L) severe symptoms,
    or renal insufficiency)
