I purchased this at Palm Hammock on November 5, 2011. All of these were sadly needing water and unlabeled. Because they looked so sad, I was charged all of $2.00 for the plant. I'm assuming it's some type of gesneriad. Water, bright light and careful care resulted in this... but what is it?

It's been promptly identified as Seemannia sylvatica (previously Gloxinia sylvatica). From what I've now read, it's a fall to late winter bloomer.
